Anyone recommend anywhere in Wiltshire that can be reached by bus from Swindon? [Obviously Avebury area is always the default possibility].

I was just looking at Stonehenge area, having found there is a bus from Swindon to Amesbury via Durrington. My (unused in the field) Explorer map is covered with highlighting, but there seems to be very little of it that is accessible? Is this right?

Where would one start with an impromptu, middle-of-a-rainy-Saturday bus-reliant trip to Stonehenge? Is it completely pointless as an idea? Would I get frustrated by the people and the difficulty of actually getting to see any of the monuments? Which is the best way to approach? etc etc etc.

I'm sure this has been covered on other threads but there's too many to search and almost all the current fieldnotes seem to involve cars...

Have only just seen this - the X5 is a pretty good bus service if you don't mind walking from Amesbury or Durrington. I don't claim to use it that often as it takes about an hour and a half to get to Amesbury.
I haven't used it to get to Stonehenge so would be very interested to hear how you get on - can't see why it wouldn't work. A long way though - from Cheltenham.

Well there is something to be said for owning a car ;) but travel further on the train, there is Bath and Bristol stations to get off at and explore Somerset.
Stoney Littleton long barrow is a lovely walk down the lane and then through the fields up to the barrow. Then I checked for buses and there are only'fare cars' for residents - no good.
What about getting off at Bristol, there is a bus service to Stanton Drew and the stone circle.
Good walking to be had in the Mendips, Nine Barrows, Ashen Barrows and the Priddy henges all very near to each other..not sure about buses but of course there are services to Wells and Glastonbury.

Curiosity killed the cat I know but is it principle that stops you from owning a car?
