I did take the time to type out a passage attributed to Ceasar that is saying they did exist but didn't commit any of their teachings to writing. I consider that to be a historical record.

Yes, exactly. I always thought they were generally accepted as a matter of historical record (even if a biased one). This thread seems to be suggesting that this might not actually be so.
