if you increase the pixels but keep the sensor size the same the digital noise increases

That's what I thought to be the case, so it makes the extra MPs seem kind of pointless (pardon the pun).

I think the last TZ model moved up from 16 mp to 18 mp, with no increase in sensor. I'm wondering if the 16 mp model-before-last is a better buy on that basis (not to mention being cheaper)?
