We used Wilma's Nordic Summer Midgie Repellent last year and it seemed to work quite well. It's quite expensive but it lasts a long time. This is the first seller that came up when I googled it but there are probably others, maybe cheaper:

Smells nice too! And you don't look quite as slimy as when you use Skin So Soft!

My policy is to avoid midgey areas in high summer, i have a really violent reaction to their bites, each one tends to swell to marble like proportions so it's a good policy and one of the reasons i prefer winter wanderings.

My mate Ian could launch himself into a swarm and not suffer a single bite, they just don't like the taste of him, little bastards. :)
