I regard Stonehenge as "lost" to people of our ilk, i just hope Avebury never becomes a place long ago remembered for having free and open access such as SH had 40 years ago. Why do i so little faith in EH. ?
Again, I'm not sure that EH are to blame for placing restrictions on access in response to greater numbers. What are they to do? Nothing?
To be honest Nigel i really couldn't care what they do at Stonehenge, the place has such a bad image and delivers such a horrible visitor experience i now almost regard it as a non entity (probably a better way of describing it that wont come to me atm) so it's off my radar as far as ancient sites go, i wouldn't be at all upset if i never approached within eyesight of it again.
Let EH have their cash cow, as long as they keep their hands off Avebury and the rest of "our" sites. I don't regard SH as belonging to the people anymore.

High Five.

I haven't been since the ropes were put up and never will again. I can't see how there can be any 'atmosphere' there any more being shunted along with the rest of the herd. After experiencing the freedom it once offered and with EH's approval spending the whole night there once amongst the stones how could I possibly gain anything further out of the experience.
But who cares as I have the whole of Bodmin Moor to explore where there are no restrictions, more stone circles than you can shake a stick at and be almost guaranteed to have the place to myself to study, photograph, draw and just soak in the real atmosphere without being hurried along and sent on my way with a 'Have a nice day' through the customary gift shop!
