I regard Stonehenge as "lost" to people of our ilk, i just hope Avebury never becomes a place long ago remembered for having free and open access such as SH had 40 years ago. Why do i so little faith in EH. ?

Again, I'm not sure that EH are to blame for placing restrictions on access in response to greater numbers. What are they to do? Nothing?
