I'd like to think the visits helped me cope, anyway.
Yeah, I know what you mean. I've been thinking about Carl the last few days, having had an equivalent loss to him prior to Christmas a few years ago. I certainly found that visits and long head-clearing walks help with that and in truth the levels of obsession I now have are at least partly due to that. But you're already obsessed enough!

Berwyns are quite high (ha) on the notional list, but I need to get myself back into practice to do a proper walk justice. Your suggestion of poles may be one I need to take up.

Poles are worth a go... particularly helpful on descents. I reckon they've certainly helped keep me going... hopefully for a few more years yet. We'll see.

Guess you need to pick 'n choose routes according to what is (relatively) comfortable. Trial and error...It's not always as obvious as you might think. For example I wouldn't be surprised to find getting back to Tryfan easier for me than back to Drygarn Fawr since the former is 'straight up'.
