It's best to steer clear of digital zoom, the camera just upsizes the centre of the frame, something better done at home with Photoshop or similar. When buying, check that the OPTICAL zoom range covers the angles of view you are likely to require.
The most important recent addition to compacts is image stabilisation, again, optical stabilisation is the best. It's a shame that this is largely negated by the unstable "mexican wave" holding position forced on the user by the current trend of omitting a viewfinder.

Well right out of the blue I have a camera, but with a sting in the tail! My missus arrived back this afternoon from visiting her mother in Winchester and has come back with a Samsung S1065 for me as a present. 10.2 Mega Pixels with all sorts of things on the dial I don't even pretend to understand yet. It has a nice clear screen on the back and a 5x optical zoom lens (I'll stop if I'm confusing you!!(g)) Face Detection whatever that is and Image Stabilisation. I went out with it late this afternoon and played around with it and found it really nice to handle. Put them into Picasa and they printed out beautifully. Well pleased I can tell you.
Now, the sting in the tail...it's bloody PINK!!! When I protested at the colour she said, 'I'll get you a matching handbag to go with it if you like'!
Bless her, she paid £30 in a s/h shop knowing I wanted one but didn't spend too much in case it was not what I wanted.
Right, nice day tomorrow here so up to the Hurlers to get those w/a shots in and over to Rillaton to snap away there! Yippee. I'll let you know how I get on with it and thanks for all the advice and recommendations.
