You happen upon a potential piece of unrecorded rock art, it's badly worn, you have no water to hand to enhance it, you won't be back in the area for a very long time if ever, the light is flat so a photograph is impossible, is it ok to piss on it. ?

Go for it I say.

For me, one of the great joys of getting drunk is going out in the back yard for a ciggie, and pissing in a plant pot. It has a totally natural vibe, and recycles nutrients.

Depends whether you were out on the lash the night before and whether your piss is still 100% proof or not!

Is spiting a more acceptable substitute for smaller pieces?

You mean the Urinary Rock Art Enhancement (URAE) tecnnique? It's an ancient system, devised by sheep, rabbits, hominids and other species. Not sure if it's archaeologically the 'done thing' though. If for one find it utterly shocking and think the practice should be banned!

Pissing on rock art seems kinda disrespectful to me.

Actually, after Fitzcolorado said it seemed disrespectful I started to wonder if ancient peoples used the stone dissolving properties of uric acid to help their carving of such things in the first place....

Sorry but I find the idea totally wrong. If you should be in the circumstance Megadread initially suggested and you're desperate to see it, make arrangements to go back in better light or with water.

There's a news item on site now about someone defacing Uffington White Horse, and on this thread there's serious consideration to pissing on an ancient piece of rock art? Someone got arrested for urinating on a war memorial last year, anyone here disagree with that?

Besides, my piss would dissolve the whole stone....

This hypothetical circumstance was a practical one for me today . I found a new unrecorded rock art panel http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/site/13088/craig_tombane.html you can see by the initial pic summer sun and shallow cup marks are hard to bring out so water was required and the nearest water course turned out to be a 25 minute round trip . No problem but by the time I got back the sun was in cloud . I don't believe for a minute human sheep or cattle piss is going to make that much difference to a rock that has survived up to 5,000 years of British weather , feet are different . What is obvious is that a person intentionally pissing on rock art is doing so in the full knowledge what the act represents .In most , if not all cultures ,it would be considered at least disrespectful (water sports enthusiasts notwithstanding) it is quite a powerful metaphor . If the person doing it was also aware of a possible connection between RA and symbols it makes it even more perverse than some kid kicking against bourgeois morality . There is no doubt that when they are doing it they must be thinking “I'm pissing on rock art “ a wee bit disturbing ,anyone witnessing it might smile but it's odd , the recording bit is nonsense , nobody is that lazy .Fitz commented that it seems disrespectful , that's good enough for me ,on a different but connected note I also thing being a paramedic is as honourable a job as you get .I never bothered replying to the hypothetical situation as it seemed so extreme for a situation in Britain/Ireland where water is usually to be found in rock art areas within at least a mile ,it's not as if it's the Sierra Nevada never mind the Cuillin ridge . and if recording is so important a return visit would make sense in different lighting conditions and there would be plenty of other aspects of recording to be done on the initial visit . Fwiw I would suggest if it's that important to get the pic give yourself a bit more exercise ,go for the water ,you might find some more rock en route and you'll probably feel better about yourself .

Apologise if this has already been said as I can't be asked to read all the replies, but if you're going to sign that bit of rock art Megadread just make sure it's in your own handwriting!!!!

On Oxen Craig the other day I would have needed a lot of piss. Hmmmmmm..............

Go for it...go nuts...really splash about. Try to wet as many rocks as you can and then try to beat your record on each trip. Could be a fun family game at avebury to see how far around the circle you can get...
