in Orkney there is the parish of Stenness with the Stones of Stenness and the Ring of Brodgar. Also Stanerandy, Stanemora, Stensigar and Stonepark. Possibly Stanger too (Boardhouse). Trouble is telling standing stone derived name from those named for stones in general e.g. Staney Hill, Stanny Knowe and Stenny Holm.
Just noticed this Wideford (and your second post) thanks. There seems to be a lot of 'Stans' on Orkney so is its origin Old English or Norse I wonder.
Stone does indeed crop up in place names a lot - there is a Stonehouse in Gloucestershire, not too far from where I now live, which is self-explanatory.
Hope the original question was not overly simplistic (I guess I'm on a learning curve).
