North Wales tips?

close

Ey up!

I've found a cheap as chips single room in a hotel in Llandudno, and seeing as I've never been to many North Wales sites I'm thinking of having a couple of days away next week.

I'll prob arrive late on night one, which'll give me a full day around Anglesey and that area the next day. The day after I'll drive down to see Ysbytty Cyfyn, and take in any sites on the way. Suggestions?

Any tips for 'must sees'? In that area? Stone circles are priority, but I'll take in anything that's interesting in that area.

My TMA has good coverage of that area, but it's always worth a forum post before a trip.

I haven't had proper a megalithic break since 2006, as in 'a few days away on me own'. Getting excited!

If you get good weather go up into the hills above Penmaenmawr,
the druids circle is the best in N.Wales, theres also other circles and stones there.
Capel Garmon and Maen y bard on Tal y fan with Cerrig Priffaid stone circle.
Or a place I rediscovered just last week Hafodygors wen, beautiful surroundings and possibly a scottish type four poster (probably not though)http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/site/12437/hafodygors_wen.html
Llandudno isnt too bad either the copper mine is fairly breathtaking
plus a stone row and a burial chamber.
Dont forget that behind the church at Ysbyty Cynfyn is Dolgamfa stone circle its a little cracker.
So much will depend on the weather, take care

Bryn Celli Ddu on Anglesey is well worth a visit, despite being fenced in. Check out the tree-trunk like pillar in the chamber - fascinating.

And I second Postman's suggestion of Penmaenmawr, but make sure the weather is OK, it can get pretty wild and windy up there even on a relatively fine day.

I had a bank holiday weekend there a couple of years ago. You've obviously got the Great Orme mine to visit - it's very impressive! Capel Garmon is a must see too - we went in lambing season and the noise from the herd was incredible...

Additional to the other suggestions I'd say a trot round Anglesey is a must - we did most of the sites there in a (long) day. Lots of dolmens etc to see there.

We also headed over to Harlech way but didn't venture off road much - there are some stone rows up on the hills above the town that might be worth investigating.

The weather (and my health at the time) stopped me getting up to Penmaenmawr.

Enjoy!!

If you go to Capel Garmon, and have the time the Fairy glen isnt too far away and is one of the most gorgeous places in Snowdonia.
If your driving from Llandudno to Ysbyty Cynfyn will you go through the mountains which is a good drive, or even better go through Caernarfon and then Harlech, youll be driving past tre'r Cieri "the city of the giants"
Dyffryn Ardudwy two really good dolmens or for a longer walk Bryn Cader Faner.
There is lots of stones both single and in rows near Cader Idris, the big mountain near Barmouth.
Bryn Celli Ddu is the best place in Anglesey, but I also have a soft spot for
Meini Hirion.
Toodle-oo

Llandudno's lovely. I hope you get good weather. North Wales *is* Wales and if you tell people your ancestors came from there you'll get a special welcome. Conway Castle's not without interest.
