as the R*s named druids for their oak connection it may be the name druid then stands for any supposed connection with tree-worshippers in general rather than owt specific, and stone circles being get equated with sacred groves sets the lithic ball rolling

Could be, but what strikes me with the R*s entry into Britain, you don't see much evidence of 'druidism' here in the physical form i.e. wooden idols be they big or small. The only thing you can connect them with (apart from the written account of Tacitus) is 'Nemeton' which means sacred grove........
