way too many of these. Obviously a few really are sites left incomplete, abandoned or whatever. Seems to me that what is most often meant is that the 'defenses' are incomplete, that they are regarded as unfinished fortifications as the old type-name implies, with folk not truly embracing their wider/other functions. Any takes ?

Ladle hill is a good example of this settlement/fort abandonment.

Why, when nearly complete, was all building work stopped? Excavations here don't seem to have come up with any answers.
Jim.

Yup, climbed Durn Hill the other day which is supposedly an unfinished fort. Three rows of ditches, walls, earthworks seems to me to be a massive amount of work for an uncomplete job. Also climbed Wheedlemont, Canmore says that defence was maybe not the first priority. So I don't have any answers either.......Sorry!
