I've decided to have a go at camping. Never done it before, I'm going to buy a tent and go and have a night somewhere as a 'tester'.

Now I bet there are loads of campers here. How do you find camp sites? Is there an on-line database?

Anyone recommend a campsite that's by a monument/circle within three hours drive of the West Midlands? I'd like to camp at or by a site. I like being there at night, see. I'll take my telescope too.

Not Avebury or Stonehenge though, I know about the camping situations there.

Thanks!

Have you "done" the Rudston monolith area. ?
Thorpe hall camp site is 200 yards up the road and its a great site to stay, not much light pollution either so you'll get a decent session in with the scope, if you can keep out of the Bosville arms that is, nice pub friendly locals and decent grub.

Edit: You could also do worse than Barn farm campsite at Birchover, very handy for the nine ladies, rowtor rocks rock art and stanton moor in general, it's only a mile or two to Nine stones close and robin hoods stride via the Andle stone and Dol tor too.
The pubs only a couple of minutes walk away as well, gotta get your priorities right eh. ; )

Campsites are marked on the map - tourist guide maps particularly - with wigwam symbols. My suggestion would be to go west to the Lleyn peninsula and to take an OS map along. Just look for the standing stones that are marked on it. Anglesey's close by too. Happy camping - I've spent years in a tent - always put the back of it into the wind and you'll be ok. Take a Walkman for the weather forecast and enough money for chips if it rains. Make sure you've got clean water, a decent book and a bog roll in a dry place. That's all you need to know really ...

I'm into this one . . I love the Peak sites. I've thought before how the sites are quite close on the map, yet you have to drive around for ages to get to them.

Will certainly look into that. It's a couple of hours drive from here. I can take my 'Rock Around The Peak' book.
