I've decided to have a go at camping. Never done it before, I'm going to buy a tent and go and have a night somewhere as a 'tester'.

Now I bet there are loads of campers here. How do you find camp sites? Is there an on-line database?

Anyone recommend a campsite that's by a monument/circle within three hours drive of the West Midlands? I'd like to camp at or by a site. I like being there at night, see. I'll take my telescope too.

Not Avebury or Stonehenge though, I know about the camping situations there.

Thanks!

Have you "done" the Rudston monolith area. ?
Thorpe hall camp site is 200 yards up the road and its a great site to stay, not much light pollution either so you'll get a decent session in with the scope, if you can keep out of the Bosville arms that is, nice pub friendly locals and decent grub.

Edit: You could also do worse than Barn farm campsite at Birchover, very handy for the nine ladies, rowtor rocks rock art and stanton moor in general, it's only a mile or two to Nine stones close and robin hoods stride via the Andle stone and Dol tor too.
The pubs only a couple of minutes walk away as well, gotta get your priorities right eh. ; )

Castlerigg is within night-time walking distance of a campsite:

Not sure if it's within your driving distance. Fairly minimal light pollution though, so might be worth a thought.

If you want any advice about which 1 or 2 berth tent to think about Harve, gis a shout, I've just done a stupidly detailed amount of research into what's out there at the minute.

Hi, if your interested check out "wolferlow wigwams" near wolferlow in the west midlands, its an excellent quiet site, no need for a tent, they are insulated with electrics, toaster, kettle. showers and toilet block and also a kitchen block. £17.50 pppn. about ten miles from Worcester. not far from Mitchells fold stone circle, Arthurs stone and numerous castles and other ancient monuments. unpolluted skies at night, peaceful and run by very friendly people on a farm. Good luck and enjoy!

Graeme.

2 kitchen chairs.
1 candlewick bedspread.
6 clothes pegs.
1 back garden.
