"Outside the political arena (Lord Kennet) was chairman of the Council for the Protection of Rural England; founding secretary of the campaign for the abolition of censorship; a campaigner for listed buildings, which included St Pancras station; a member of the Redundant Churches Fund; a chairman of the Avebury Society; and patron of Action for the River Kennet."*

Lord Kennet was also a staunch opponent of the proposed Bonds Garage housing development at Avebury. See - http://www.heritageaction.org/?page=theheritagejournal&p=2

In addition he was for many years at the forefront of defending our national icon from a succession of schemes that would have disfigured it forever. http://www.savestonehenge.org.uk/saga.html

The very imminent announcement of a new, modest visitor centre hopefully well away from the stones and improvements that don't involve driving massive new highways across the World Heritage landscape are in no small part due to his ceaseless efforts. It was a close call on a number of occasions. In the modern fashion his passing should be greeted with respectful applause.
