Hi Moss , I thought he was a great writer ,comes across as a good bloke as well , judging by saturdays guardian obit . I don't accept a lot of the sighting stars across barrows etc , but that's just my view (pun intended ) . The Holbein book was even better than the astro stuff for me .
Hi Tiompan, thats where I lost him 'sighting over barrows', how can you judge the depth of soil in a ditch now compared to when it was dug all those years ago, even the most accurate of maths could'nt have arrived at such a thing. But he was a very clever man, and the Guardian obit, which was better (to which I can't find a link) at least had the picture of the painting by Holbein......
I was looking for that link too on saturday , but no luck . The other problem with the stars stuff is precession , you have to be spot on with the dates otherwise they might not have been in the position you suggest , luckily that doesn't apply to sun and moon . He certainly knew his stuff and kept his feet on the ground /in ditch . Oddly enough I only came to the Stonehenge book book recently ,long after the others

I was looking for that link too on saturday , but no luck .
Hmm... strange. Just checked as well and the obituaries jump from 21 November to 24 November - nothing for the 22nd. Maybe the family didn't want it to go online or summat. It's on page 51 of the news section if that's any help with, as moss says, the painting by Holbein.
