Hi Tiompan, thats where I lost him 'sighting over barrows', how can you judge the depth of soil in a ditch now compared to when it was dug all those years ago, even the most accurate of maths could'nt have arrived at such a thing. But he was a very clever man, and the Guardian obit, which was better (to which I can't find a link) at least had the picture of the painting by Holbein......

I was looking for that link too on saturday , but no luck . The other problem with the stars stuff is precession , you have to be spot on with the dates otherwise they might not have been in the position you suggest , luckily that doesn't apply to sun and moon . He certainly knew his stuff and kept his feet on the ground /in ditch . Oddly enough I only came to the Stonehenge book book recently ,long after the others
