It's odd though, don't you think? That they should survive in such inhospitable climes, whilst further south there's nothing. Maybe the silicon dioxide layer only forms in cold conditions.

Or perhaps the cold prevents microbial activity digesting the organic stuff in the pigments. Intriguing stuff, and quite superb to know that such ephemeral stuff has survived for so long.

Silicon dioxide is silica - which is common sand - which constitutes sandstone. It's an amazing material and there are theories that there could be silicon-based lifeforms somewhere, rather than the carbon-based ones you find nearby.
