Ah, thanks for that Hob - excellent article! and this bit is especially interesting -

“These paintings have survived thanks to the formation of a thin layer of silicon dioxide on the rock surface, which has protected them."

It's odd though, don't you think? That they should survive in such inhospitable climes, whilst further south there's nothing. Maybe the silicon dioxide layer only forms in cold conditions.

Or perhaps the cold prevents microbial activity digesting the organic stuff in the pigments. Intriguing stuff, and quite superb to know that such ephemeral stuff has survived for so long.
