Adverts

The Modern Antiquarian seems to be all adverts just now.

Just like the telly.

Tomwatts,

I assume you're referring to, along with various other forum topics of the moment, my reply to FourWinds, and possibly his recommendation of two books. I placed a weblink to Oxbow books, of which I have no connection whatsoever. The company concerned happen to offer an incredible range of books suited to the interests of the members of TMA, which are hard to source elsewhere.

The reason that "adverts" are placed on the forum is that we wish to inform other like-minded people of things that could be to their advantage, or of things that may interest them. In the vast majority of cases there is no gain to be had for the informer.

At least I am not aware of any pure advertising on this site, and I'm sure the TMA-Eds would put a stop to any hard-faced comercial activity.

I understand your concerns. Perhaps other TMA-ers could voice their opinion as to whether they want such links included in the forum.

Best wishes,
TE.

Talking of adverts, look what i found!,

Recently there has been lots of references to books, DVD and places of interest for all us like minded people to look at.
I would hardly call it advertising on the scale of TV or other webs sites.
There, 99 per cent of the time you get told about things your not even remotely interested in and most are from self interest groups normally trying to get you to part with your hard earned cash (the SWS DVD link is more about breaking even I think).
On TMA you have a choice to follow a link or not, there are no flashing banners, loud music or (god forbid) pop-ups destroying your viewing pleasure. If there were I wouldn't give TMA the time of day.
I like the way the people on here informed me of things that may be of interest to me so keep it up.

:o)

As recent poster of the 'Standing with Stones' DVD thread, I am sorry if I have offended your idea of how contributors should restrict themselves. I did not do it unthinkingly, but on balance reasoned that the DVD itself would be of immense interest to most folk here and that although I have not contributed to the forum in the past, that the content of the DVD itself would be a contribution to those who saw it. Obviously we are keen to sell the DVD and to recoup the investment in time and money we have made, but neither myself, nor my partner in crime Rupert, are outsiders who have come in and pillaged the subject simply as a revenue generator. We are both enthusiasts that have long been visiting TMA and that reckoned that such a project was long overdue and who were just lucky enough to have the time, the equipment, experience and enough loopiness to believe we could pull it off.

I hope this somewhat eases your discomfort at the nature of the SWS posting at least. For what it's worth, both Rupert and I are keen to be around as contributors and to answer questions that the film may provoke.

At the time I submitted the above message, the first three entries on the thread list were plugs for different products.

My comment was not a criticism, but merely a light hearted observation.

The Modern Antiquarian is one of my favourite websites, and I wouldn't intentionally do anything to upset the people on here.

Are you trying to sell me a telly?
