Don't think it's too soon to start thinking about this as our overseas friends might need to plan a bit in advance.

The 2006 Meet was at the Cove. 2007 we got completely rained out and spent most of the afternoon in the Red Lion... oh well... could have been worse :-)

Haven't even thought about dates for this year but it'd be good to have something to look forward to in the summer maybe?

Sounds like a winner to me! I'm game!

And cos it's not far for me to travel, dates are pretty flexible...

Avebury's always a good bet due to the aforementioned bolthole in case of inclement weather.

Roll on Summer!

I'm sure we'd be up for it if we're around.

Yeah,I would be up for a punch up..whoops..I mean ..meet up !!!

Great! May I start the bidding (for no particular reason) with Saturday 28 or Sunday 29 June?

Would love to go - at any time apart from summer! Was over last summer but the featureless blue/grey sky meant I didn't get any great pictures so I'm going to make a return visit in autumn/winter instead.

On the other hand, I'm considering a whirlwind tour of Kilmartin in the next month or two if there's anyone about that part of the world.

Alas for the 2008 meet and us. Loie has agreed, after much soul- and budget searching, that next year (2009) we might be able to go Driving the Stone Age in Turkey. (Gobekli and Karahan Tepe, Catal Hoyuck, Cayonu, and associated museums.) I'm in the throes of trying to figure out how best to do that, which is one reason I'm so far behind on posting here.

Given limited funds for travel, she's decided we'll have to stay close to home this year to afford DtSA VIII in Turkey next year. So we won't be attending Megameet 2009. If anyone has a suggestion for an illustration, I'll whip up a file from which you all can make shirts!

If any of you duffers feels rich, come to Turkey.

Last reminder folks - the Avebury Megameet is two weeks today on Sunday, 29 June.

Weather permitting we meet up somewhere close to the Cove at around noon. Nothing particular planned, just turn up and meet likeminded people, share photos, experiences, ideas etc. Good idea to bring something to sit on and something to eat and drink as well if you want. If the weather's poor we meet in the large front bar at the Red Lion. Frequent visitors to Avebury will know both the major places of interest but also some hidden gems in the area that first time visitors might otherwise miss.

If anyone is/was thinking of camping at The Barge Inn in Honeystreet, you may like to know that this is on:

Could be great fun, could be a pain if you want some peace!

*bump*

Here's the design (so far) for this year's shirt. It's rushed so I do wonder what you'll make of it.

If you've already requested one then now's your chance to change your mind!

Otherwise, I'll produce a few in a range of sizes for the day, and the design will of course be available to anyone wishing to iron-on their own.

Sunday's coming!

So where's everybody meeting? And what time?

I'm a bit confused, and don't have time to read all the messages etc.

Great meeting everyone again, here's to next year.

Hey!

Good to meet everyone, at least we only had a few spots of rain!

Looking forward to the next one,

Big Hi to everyone I met at Avebury on Sunday. Hope you all had a good time.

Just a note on the next meeting to be held at Avebury for Lammas - Fri 1st and Sat Aug 2nd 2008

This year sees a partial solar eclipse from 09:04 to 13:38 bst on Friday Aug 1st.

The Druid will be conducting his usual Lughnassadh ceremony during this time period.
This takes the form of; starting at 10 am with an opening ceremony in the Sun circle, followed by a processional walk to Silbury Hill and the blessing for the Mother Goddess, for a successful harvest with the Lammas cakes.
We all possess back to the Avebury sun circle for the final part of the ceremony and the distribution of the Lammas cakes. These cakes are baked the night before and contain the very first ripe barley of this year's crop. They were taken back to the tribal land and buried in the ground to be cultivated, prior to next year's harvest.

On the following day, Sat 2nd Aug, a free and open Gorsedd will be held in the Sun circle at 13:00 pm.
After which everybody, young and old, will be invited to take part in the 2008 Lammas Games.

The Lammas Games will be held as usual, behind the Moon circle in the SW quadrant.
There will be the traditional events such as wheel chair jousting, the discus, shoot-put, Find-it, Rhyme around the circle, the blind sailor, eat the chocolate, swimming with turtles, newspaper tag, the three legged race, the egg and spoon race, over and under, together with stuff I haven't thought up yet.

The stocks will be deployed for any cheats, cads or unsporting behaviour.

This could go on for some time depending upon the numbers involved, the weather and the level of the adult’s fitness.

The Lammas events are held with the blessing on the NT and EH.
Camping in the picnic area over Friday and Saturday night is not guaranteed.
We are granted this privilege through the Avebury Guardian stewardship and it is a self governed event. The usual rules and regulations will apply and every tent must be removed by 16:00 hours on Sunday afternoon.

I will post a reminder and more details on these events later in the month when things are more organised.

P.S.

Avebury Day (the village fete) and the start of National Archaeology Week coincide on Saturday the 19th of July this year.
Besides the usual fete events and stalls on the sports field, there will be a photographic exhibition of early Avebury images by the National Trust.
The National Trust are also running free tours by the archaeologist for Avebury, on Saturday and Sunday. There are events in the barn on both days too.
On Sunday 20th, there will also be a car boot sale on the sports field.

Money raised goes towards the Avebury sports pavilion.
