Eric Avebury always reminds me of my first father in law who worked for Unesco.. kind, gentle people with a deep religious instinct for right action.. They speak out against injustice and try to change the world by highlighting abuse of power. The problem is of course that, we, through our government, tacitly accept so much wrongdoing if it is to our western advantage. I won't continue the political thread for fear of drifting off topic but I loved this bit from his blog dated Wednesday, October 31, 2007 -

"Yesterday the Parliament was prorogued, ie ended, and the new Session will be opened by the Queen on November 6. I have never attended the State Opening in the 45 years I've been in Parliament, because I don't see Parliament as being about dressing up in funny clothes like something out of a Gilbert and Sullivan opera."

His instinct for right action extends to archaeology, as recently well demonstrated, fortunately. His views could hardly be ignored bearing in mind he descends from both the father of archaeology and the father of its protection.
