hill forts is anybody there ?????????

I love them!
In fact so much, this summer was scheduled to be The Summer of Hillforts. Its been delayed till next year now as then the gf will be able to drive and can drop me off at one then go do her own thing.

She wasn't quite so enamoured by the idea of spending every weekend looking at wessex hillforts... Strange really.

Hi, I did a database for hillforts last year its on the yahoo group, Somerset, part Gloucester also, and then started Wiltshire but got bored with it and lost the map I was taking it from. But have done the local ones round bath, as probably Jamie has, I probably blogged those.
The thing about hillforts is not much excavation or information around.
The ones round Bath are; Littledown, Stantonbury, Solsbury and Bathampton. Just down the road on the Cotswold are Horton, Old Sodbury and the Hinton/Dyrham Fort.... the following link should take you somewhere ;)

for the west mids worc/shrop area try Wychbury, Woodbury, British Camp, Kinver, Cannock Chase, Bury Ditches and Caer Caradoc

Hi bean,

Where have you been, old bean? Sorry bad joke :-)

Just to echo previous posters, I like visiting hillforts too.

My favourites if you ever make it north are the Clwydian Range forts. Hiraddug (near Prestatyn), Y Gaer (Bodfari), Penycloddiau (massive), Arthur (perfectly formed), Y Gaer (Llanbedr - very nice) and finally the majestic Fenlli.

What were hiilforts? Don't ask me. Must have taken some building and it's a bit chilly up there for a des res. Though I think maybe the Clwydian Range forts were the frontline between the evil Deceangi and the noble Ordovices to the west. Just my 2p.
