Rye-Downed ?

I am the farmer in question. The stone was described in the archeological survey of Bodmin Moor as 'dubious'.
As it says on my event site I have had it dowsed by serveral authorities and the idea of the Labyrinth was to mark its importance rather than detract from it.
The finished labyrinth will be etched into the ground and so will only be visiable from the air

Dominic,

from looking at the event site, I did notice the phrase:
"Help to create a massive stone labyrinth around the ancient Ryedown standing stone in time for the solstice sunrise"

put that way, it does sound more like the bewildering NewAgeVandalism that's getting more common ... Avebury, Men-an-Tol, Coldrum, they've all had it and lots more

yes, all stones are by definition ancient, but does this post mean that you know that the site is a bit of grass with a bit of stone on and no more, or that by dowsing you've determined the site *is* significant ... but surely if that is the case, is altering the site really the right thing to do?

Does that make any sense? Is it sacred or not? You're charging people to do something they can only do because the site isn't listed, but the significance of the event depends on the fact that it should ...

hmm

First off Dominic thanks for coming along and making a contribution. Please understand that the people here care greatly for such monuments and I suppose we all really want to understand the situation surrounding the Ryedown stone.

As RiotGibbon asked - did your dowsing produce anything? If so is it right to do something that will undoubtedly affect this 'something'? If not is it right to sell the venture/experience on the premise of the magic that people automatically impose at the mention of a 'standing stone'? You are obviously aware that this is a very powerful and emotive subject for many and you do not need to refer to this 'magick' for it to work in your favour.

If the stone is 'dubious' then this obviously means that it still COULD be something so isn't it better to preserve it just in case?

What would be wrong with duplicating the stone nearby and putting the maze around that? You know, in a flattering mimicry kind of way.

One last thing - how has response been to your venture? Have you had more support than negative comments?
