One of the upsides of TMA being down all yesterday was the opportunity to spend some quality time at the Megalithic Portal. I notice that Andy B, founder of the Portal and Julian Cope wannabee, is breaking new ground with a reward scheme for site and photo submissions. Amongst the books on offer if you get 15 points are 'essential' Prehistory titles such as 'Last of the Hippies' by C J Stone and 'Best Pub Walks In The Lakeland Fringes'.

I will off course today be rushing down to Currys today to purchase a camera.

Just wondering, is TMA going to follow suit? I fear this reward scheme will see a large defection of TMA stone snappers to the Portal as I notice in the fine print that photos 'must not have been previously posted elsewhere on the web (with the exception of your personal web site or general purpose web gallery sites such as Flickr or similar.)' - i.e. anywhere except TMA ;-(

I think that's rather funny. And sad. I don't think there will be a migration of folks from here to there though. Most people are polarised over which site they use. There are users who use both sites, though, but to get around this little clause all they have to do is post them on the Portal first and then post them here. Then, at the time they are added to MP, they have not been previously posted elsewhere :-)

I wander if they'd want the book back if you asked them to delete everything from the site after receiving it ...

As an aside, I think your description of Andy B as a JC wannabe is a little off target. After all, MP was the first site of its kind. It's a shame it still looks and feels like it was the first of its kind, though.

LOL! How odd!

I can think of 2 possible reasons:

1. They're getting desperate in Mr B's bizarre one-way 'competition' with TMA

2. They've overstocked on a bunch of stuff & they want rid!

I post (when I have bloody time) stuff here rather than the Portal coz I think the site's better designed, easier to use, and the community on the board is (usually) ace!!!!

Mind you, actually, maybe I'll delete all me pix from here & take 'em over there - there's only about 1,000*, + all the 'overseas' ones I'm keeping back for when TMA goes European!!!! My first free book will be North Nottinghamshire Church Walks by Alan and Janet Nash....

Or mebbe I'lll stay here! :^D

Personally I think the portal is a wonderful resource. Although I very rarely contribute to the site I enjoy browsing through the articles and forums.
A couple of years ago the site seemed to be languishing in the doldrums but now they have opened up to international contributions and have gone from strength to strength.
I also think that everyone on the TMA forum owes a debt of gratitude to Andy for providing a forum for all the colourful folk who used to jam-up TMA with talk of lizards, energy lines, freemasons etc.
As for the prizes, if Andy wants to share a little of his meagre revenue with his contributors then more power to him.
