I must say I'm not really aware of this - maybe I don't quite know what you mean by it?

Also I'm not quite sure why a person would want to remain anonymous if they stand by their views, unless they're the type of views that are going to get them into trouble. (I don't necessarily think that 'Hob' and 'Chris Collyer' would have wanted their real names kept out of the paper - maybe they weren't asked or contacted).

I don't think putting people's pseudonyms into inverted commas implies disrespect either, it's just a grammatical acknowledgement that they are pseudonyms, surely.

Ultimately, a name is a name, whether it be the one on your birth certificate, marriage certificate, or the nickname on a shirt. I am known as slumpy by hundreds of people [even my parents], most of whom know my real name so for me it's no big problem. There are just as likely to be as many duplicate slumpys as there are duplicates of my own real name.

Cursuswalker is my Pagan name. It started life as an anonymous e-mail address name in the days (not so long ago) when it was still legal to discriminate against employees (teachers in my case) on the basis of their religion.

It is now an actual alternative name for me. In fact many people use the name Cursus for me even though they know my Birth name (NOT Real name).

I would therefore be quite offended to see it put in quote marks.

A couple of well-known (and a few lesser known) quotes by anonymous authors then. The quotes could equally be suffixed with a pseudonym but the endgame would still be the same. The authors might be unknown but in no way is the value of their sentiment diminished because of their anonymity. I'll provide links to anonymous works of art as well if you want - it'll take a little longer.
