Probably OT but check out the stuff left by the Knights Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem. They held many estates in Lancashire during the mediaeval period and Malta was one of their strongholds. They were into stone in a big way - but it wasn't stones as we know them, rather tightly mortared fortifications. Still stone !
