I do borrow my dad's ticket when I'm in Notlob and away from the www - but I'd suggest the best maps aren't so much in the Local Studies bit but in the County Archive. There's some really old and some really big ones there. Newcastle Central Library is shut for a few years for refurbishment - it's probably just a plan to shake off the dodgers that go in there to keep warm.
