Nah, I noticed it at the time, watching it live.
I was sitting in a fried-noodle shop in downtown Kyoto at the time so didn't catch much of what he said at all :-) In fact, I missed out on quite a lot back then and am still catching up with Monty Python episodes :-)
Had i been him i would have said something outlandish about the price of fish fingers or something, but i guess that's why i was never chosen.
