The missing 'a' was found by an Australian computer bod

Nah, I noticed it at the time, watching it live. I'm surprised a gent of your seniority and calibre doesn't recall that Mr L. They made a big tease out of what he was going to say, no-one knew until he said it, and when he did it made no sense. He apologised when he got back.
Had i been him i would have said something outlandish about the price of fish fingers or something, but i guess that's why i was never chosen.

Something completely inane like "I keep thinking it's Tuesday" would have been my preference.

That'd be a great entry into the history books!

I was sitting in a fried-noodle shop in downtown Kyoto at the time so didn't catch much of what he said at all :-) In fact, I missed out on quite a lot back then and am still catching up with Monty Python episodes :-)

That's grist for a whole new thread :-)

The following is quite interesting -

"With the technology of the 1960s, however, his global audience heard his comment without the "a," making it "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" — a phrase that technically gave the same meaning of humankind to "man" and "mankind."" *
