Related to this subject, my trawls through RCAHMS are bringing up numerous circles that have been completely destroyed in the last 200 years, with no trace left on the ground.

Should I add these (with an appropriate note) for completeness, or should they be left off altogether? Do we need another classification of

Stone Circle (Destroyed)?

yeh this is something I've wondered about too when coming across destroyed sites. I'm of the opinion they're worthy of inclusion providing they have a Miscellaneous post (thanks Kammer!) with them explaining that there's no longer anything visible. I think knowing what was there before can help to put what is still visible nearby into context

Sometimes sites supposedly gone turn out to be "not found" rather, very easy if officialdom chooses the wrong time of year to visit. And at other times levelled is taken as meaning destroyed when it shouldn't (similarly I often find it difficult to tell from official records whether there is anything left at an excavated site or no, and occasionally even supposedly absent sites are found again, even re-excavated).

Indeed. This very day I came across a 1903 reference to a standing stone in the village of Ballinacarraig, i.e. 'Rock Town', to which it probably gave its name, about half a mile from Newgrange.

It doesn't exist now, but it was part of the Boyne Valley complex and so should be recorded somewhere.

Me too. Tho it'd be kinda nice if the 'definitely destroyed' ones had it in the sitename so it'd be easily spotted on index pages, search results etc.
