The Ullapool ferry cost us £173 for the 5 day saver which was for 2 adults and a campervan; same cost if you take a car.

It would be cheaper to go as a foot passenger and then hire a car on the otherside or fly into Glasgow, Edinburgh/Inverness (loads of flights from Dublin). You do need a car once you are there.

If you can, camp, as wild camping is acceptable on both Lewis & Harris and there are lots of spots with toilets and water, close to some amazing beaches.

we did 500 miles on the island, but we were there 7 days and did lots of dashes from Stornoway to Callanish which is about a 30 mile round trip.

Bear in mind that fuel is pricey - 106.9p per litre for diesel when we were there - Ullapool on the mainland was the same.

I think a normal return for 2 adults and a car is a little more than Vicster got for the saver ticket (about £200)

Most importantly.... as has been said before, everything grinds to a halt on a Sunday, so make sure you have provisions - The Indian in Stornoway is open though ;O)
