I flew into inverness and got the bus from there to Kyleakin on the Isle of Syke, had to hitch from there to Uig, got the ferry over to Tarbert and then had to hitch from there to Stornoway. Went back from stornoway by ferry and got the bus from Ullapool to Inverness.
So id safely say the way to go would be to hire a car. Could be pricy on the ferrys though. Id recommend trying to go via the Isle of Skye, I thought it was beautiful. The only site I saw though was literally Callinish because I didnt have any transport and was hitching around.
Sundays close down totally with no ferries so take that into account as well.

The Ullapool ferry cost us £173 for the 5 day saver which was for 2 adults and a campervan; same cost if you take a car.

It would be cheaper to go as a foot passenger and then hire a car on the otherside or fly into Glasgow, Edinburgh/Inverness (loads of flights from Dublin). You do need a car once you are there.

If you can, camp, as wild camping is acceptable on both Lewis & Harris and there are lots of spots with toilets and water, close to some amazing beaches.
