Cheers, I have Elements.

Do I need to take two photos...can I not just create another layer?

Mr H

I do a lot of this, most often I get a lot of joy from this free Photoshop action which can be downloaded from here:

http://www.digidaan.nl/indexframedigidaan.html?channelmixer/index.html

Worth checking out if you like a lot of adjustability. Add a nice duotone or colour filter and it's looking great.

Oh yeah...

A *great* free plugin is

http://www.optikvervelabs.com/

With loads of preset filters emulating classic film and camera types, in both colour and black and white, all fully customisable with sliders.

Sorry, think two things are being confused. For converting to B&W you dont need to use layers or multiple photos, thats only for getting correct exposure balance between sky and ground.

I've just being fiddling around with elements and cant find the colour channle mixer anywhere! Maybe its only available in Photoshop. In that case you will have better luck with the plug-ins morfe has linked to.
