If I plodded down to the end of the field
As my little rods did intend,
Murphy would be there to tell me
The hartifacts are at the other end.

With apologies to Bert Whitney (and I ain't sayin' nothi' more on this subject ;-)

And i ain't saying nothing more as its bad for me elth.
Except, I did find this written in crayon on a piece of paper in a golden lozenge shaped hole near the Ridgeway...

The Rhyme of Responsible Rick

Though socially we may not be
Stuck-up rich Rotarians
Yet we’re in truth a better group
Than old-style antiquarians,
And act in ways that put to shame those barrow-digging toffs
As we never dig on those,
No we never dig on those
Or so it would appear
Or so it would appear.

They were seeking on the sly for gold sarcophagi
And other sort of stuffs, beyond the reach of roughs,
But we don’t dream of gold,
Detectors CAN't find gold
Or so it would appear
Or so it would appear.

They only dug in places where they might have had some luck
A certain sign of greed
And artefactual need.
We only dig on ground
Where little can be found
Which is why we research first,
Yes it’s why we research first
Or so it would appear
Or so it would appear.

It really makes us weep, to think they dug so deep
In their disgraceful quest to ferret out the best,
Whilst we make only scratches,
To find our modest batches
...Well, maybe here and there a bit
We sometimes overdig a bit...
But it’s very very rare,
Yes, it’s very very rare,
Or so it would appear
Or so it would appear.

So remember we would never, Never ever be in error.
And your guarantee of this is that we’ve never been remiss
To offer verbal proof,
Conclusive verbal proof,
Or so it would appear
Or so it would appear.

So please think well of us
And make no further fuss,
And keep in mind our logic so sublime –
“If it belongs to all, then clearly it is mine”.
And thus it all appears
Until it disappears.
