>I mention this because of the altered states of mind Buddhist monks enter into during meditation

I'm intrigued LS, this might sound extra daft, but I've a thing about gluten/tryptophan absorption and altered states. I'm going to search out some of these recipes you mention. It's a tad too OT for here though, so I'll curtail my speculation before I vanish in ever decreasing circles of waffle.

I missed all this stonehead thing, sounds like I was lucky. How the heck did we get from 'Well done BN' to cookery? Serves me right for starting to read a thread from back to front :)

Thanks for your synopsis Hob, and to tiompan for supplying the link - fascinating stuff!

In the Far East, gluten is extracted from wheat flour so that the residue (starch) can be used as a very refined wheat starch paste. The paste is then used in the conservation of pictorial art. The separation process (using water and a machine like a cement mixer) results in a brownish doughy mass (the gluten) and a fine white starch similar to the corn starch you can buy in packets here. Both these products are then made into food stuffs but it's the wheat gluten (<i>fu</i> in Japanese) which is the interesting one. Have just googled fu but haven't found anything yet (other than Kung Fu sites :-)

Let me know if you need any more info on fu and I'll see what I can dig out :-)

"I mention this because of the altered states of mind Buddhist monks enter into during meditation"

Tibetan monks/nuns are (were) physically robust they have both dairy and barley in their diets, does this mean that they are less able to go into a trancelike meditation? Its a fascinating and vast subject diet, religion and its effect on people. For instance early celtic monks by isolating themselves in lonely places would probably only have lived on fish/seabirds, so did malnutrition/half starvation bring on all those "visions"?

Hob, I have the method of extracting gluten in my trusty Madhur Jaffrey 'Eastern Vegetarian Cooking' if you would like me to send it to you.

Absolutely fascinating Hob.
I have a personal interest here - long term exploration of altered states and a wheat intolerance. Im not a coeliac, but just cant handle wheat. One of the things it does to me is it makes me feel like im tripping when im driving.
Be interested to know what you come up with in your research.

hob, absolutely facinating....altered states....wether triggered by meditative techniques (I have some limited knowledge),herbs etc (again I have some knowledge) or locations (as in sites etc, again iI have a limited experience) If you are in fact planning on researching such iI may have some interesting info etc, and i am certain paulus will help you out as we have been joint travellers on this path of research and experience for twenty years or more!!! All the best MM
