Drawing your own sketch is fine and putting "after Joe Bloggs" is the right thing to do. I do it a lot. However - shite hits fan if you make anything other than a very rough sketch from an OS map

Indeed it does! That's why there is an open source project in Ireland called "Open Eire"* which aims to map Ireland via GPS. A very big task, but simple enough. Roads are obviously easy as you just need to track your route as you drive along and note the junctions as waypoints.
