Stone corrals

Studfold is from the Anglo-Saxon "stod" meaning a herd of horses. It and its variations of Stotfold and Statfold show that they used old enclosures to corral horses. Similar names occur as Studham - place where horses were bred, Studland - land where horses were kept and Studley - pasture for horses..... There's that ley word again, but no horses galloped in a straight line or were equipped with coat hangers ;o)

The problem that arises with this kind of name is that rather a genuine indication of function of a structure it can be a later guess as to this or occasionally folk-etymology for an alien placename.
