They are. Many sites are made more safe by having more people aware of them and visiting them, but it is also true that some sites will be vulnerable due to that wider knowledge unless extra measures were put in place.

You're right but I reckon that some sites are an awful lot more vunerable than others. If a small obscure site is composed of a debris scree laying at a 70 degree angle on a Cumbria fell, then it would only take a few people mining the scree for roughouts to dislodge the scree. Five thousand years of accumulated stratified debris lost forever.
