Thanks everybody for your tips and comments on gps use. Interesting that you all have such a varied opinion on the tool (that's what it is), I bet they said similar things about a compass in its day, what's wrong with the stars?! I always use a map and compass and am quite proficient in its use, I just get dissapointed trying to find sites and failing like others have commented - when it's foggy (Carn Lllechart first time round when I didn't find it in mid winter), when there's too much cover from ferns, bracken etc. I got this for my b day and want to become proffiecient in its use.
I have some concerns about geo cachers, but it is more to do with the fact that if you have ever seen their web sites they always describe where to park your car near to the cache (and one has competitons sponsored by Jeep for f*** sake), and never which bus goes near it. I do think overall they have a respect for the environment (apart from excessive car use) and where they place caches etc. Though I agree when it comes to archaeological areas then a virtual cache would be best. But don't you think ancient sites are at greater risk from other factors than geo cachers?
Finally talking of maps, and to give something back, here's a wicked link to the Royal Commision on Ancient & Historical Monuments in Wales free map service of every site recorded - it's blindin': http://www.coflein.gov.uk/
