if it had been cut back at an earlier age would it not now by wider than if it had been left togrow natural?

I don't know, but I suppose coppicing would only be possible when it was young, and since the slowest growth is in old age any alteration to size would be have only a marginal influence on it's apparent age.

Not quite so sure about that Nigel. I've cut back an old Yew hedge almost to the ground and the new growth is just as vigorous as a young sapling. I don't think that the age of the rootstock determines the rate of growth.
