Seems like conjurations are the flavour of the day so, before buggering off to the pub, here's mine (off-topic I'm afraid and sincere apologies but perhaps of interest if you're in the area).

The Essex Record Office (ERO) is running a one day conference on Saturday, 29 October entitled <b>Conjurations, Inchantments</b> and <b>Wichcraftes</B> which aims too explore the history of witchcraft in Essex and further afield. There is an accompanying exhibition at ERO beginning Monday, 24 October and ending Friday, 11 November.

The daylong series of talks by experts in the history of witchcraft on the 29 October will include presentations by Malcom Gaskill, Alison Rowlands and Jenny Grundy.

Thought I'd lighten the mood a little...

Just got back from this excellent one day workshop and among the many gems of wisdom freely dispensed there was this one -

A witch's familiars (no not her private parts but usually animals appearing to the witch in the form of a cat, toad, ferret etc) and doing her <i>bidding</i> in return for being allowed to suckle from her, may have given rise to the term <i>Old Biddy</i>.

The accompany exhibition is also very interesting and contains, among other things, a dried cat and a little hazel wand.

Sorry, that wasn't as light-hearted as I thought it'd be :-(
