Quick bit o research sez there was a church there from 600 (!) but the one that the ruins are left of was prob built around 1645 - so I guess the likelihood is that the skull n xbones graves are from around the same time as ythe Irish uns....

i think it's basically "memento mori" , according to Betty Willsher in "Understanding Scottish Graveyards " "in the 17th C the death's head was often accompanied by crossed bones , usually femurs , or else a single bone .However by the 18th C there were many more variations"
