Have been having a dive back into the catalogue of the 90s Scandinavian Atrium label. A kind of ECM type imprint with the focus on local folk instruments and timbres. The original cds had fairly remarkable packaging for the jewel case era and so I have hung on to them in the face of the endless battle between shrinking shelf space and the vagaries of digitisation. Anyway, these are all quite beautiful ...

Various - Under The Northern Cross
Johan Hedin - Angel Archipelago
Johann Johannson - Englaborn
Nau Ensemble - The Eternal, Variations on Joy Division
Nicolai Dunger - Eventide
Olav Johansson - Storvarten
Svante Henryson - Enkiude

Meanwhile, inspired by Radio 3's brilliant recent review of the available recordings of Mahler's 5th, I have listened to one of these a day since last Sunday.

Herbert v. Karajan & Berliner Philharmonika
Gustavo Dudamel & Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra Of Venezuela
Lorin Maazel & Vienna Philharmonic
Klaus Tennstedt & London Philharmonic Orchestra
Klaus Tennstedt & London Philharmonic Orchestra (live)
John Barbirolli & New Philharmonia Orchestra
Bernard Haitink & Berliner Philharmoniker
Rafael Kubelik & Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks

Based on the BBC excerpts I still want to buy the Rattle and the Bernstein though nine recordings of Mahler 5 might be pushing things a little.

Saw John Lees' BJH in a little venue near us this week. A bit disappointing TBH - all very polite with no oomph. Just a bit too bland, which was a shame.

Joseph K - Entomology
Magic Mushroom Band - Pictures in my Mind Anthology 1984-1994

This Heat - Out of Cold Storage box
Digging into this again, some amazing stuff. Deceit has caught my attention this week.

Vinyl:

Terminal Cheesecake - Dandelion Sauce of the Ancients
A late but strong entry for album of the year. Noisy and irreverent - splendid stuff.

Casual Nun - Super Fancy Skeleton
This is just great, and I keep coming back to it again and again. Another possible AOTY.

Prince and the Revolution - Around the World In A Day
Nudity - ..is God's Creation
Cosmic Dead - Rainbowhead
Flowers Must Die - Sista Valsen

Kill West - Raw Desire
Another bloody brilliant recent release. Play loud.

Tyrannosaurus Rex - My People Were Fair and Had Sky In Their Hair, but Now They're Content to Wear Stars on Their Brows.
An old twofer with Prophets Seers & Sages. Splendid!

11 Paranoias - Reliquary for a Dreamed of World
Heavy and great fun - another one to play very loud.

Melting Hand - High Collider
Necro Deathmort - The Capsule

12 Years since ole John Balance shuffled off this mortal coil today. In his honour, have had a week of mostly Coil related musicks and finally got around to starting to read the 'Englands Hidden Reverse' second (expanded) edition.

Other than that...

Orb - Birth
This is a cracker, Sabs level funky heaviosity with Acid King edge and the odd twidddly synth arppegio. Luuuurve it!!! So far fav' track is the aptly named Iron Mountain (not quite Iron Man, but it dos have 'Iron' in the title:) Must have played this about 50 times I love it that much.....better watch out for overkill though. Iron Mountain - https://orband.bandcamp.com/track/iron-mountain-2

The other Orb.... COW/ Chill Out World
Almost a return to the 'Adventures Beyond The Underworld' kinda vibe. Some lovely chilled out grooves on show here....lovin' it!
https://soundcloud.com/kompakt/sets/the-orb-cow-chill-out-world-1

Anyways, at the risk of being flippant, maybe in this Trump as president / post Brexit, rise of the right, quasi fascistic period we seem to be entering, the arts (and I'm thinking particularly music wise here) we'll get some artists appearing with some real fire and ire in their bellies to ignite the pyres, man the barricades and fuel us on to the revolution (that'll probably never happen, but hey!, will be awesomely soundtracked nonetheless).

Have a good one whatever you're up to!

Steve Mason - Monkey's Mind in the Devil's Time. It all comes together on this album. A feat he has struggled to achieve post beta's while showing plenty of promise. This is from 2013.

Dead Sea Apes & Black Tempest - The sun behind the sun. Great to give this another listen. Highly recommended. The simplicity of the first track is very effective and soundtracks to me an imaginery film about struggling and achieving in a dystopia. I don't know why that would be but it does. If ever there was a case for even greater than the sum of its parts...

Lisa Knapp - Hunt the Hare - The Branch of May EP. Beautiful, light trad folk with Gerry Diver in accompaniement

Ooberman - The Magic Treehouse. Slightly on the saccharine side of indie pop, but more than enough going on to keep me entertained.

Mueller_Roedilius - Imagori. Very strong collection of songs in a slowed down jazz, ambient electronic way. They are still up to it.

Kernuyck - Mariana (single). Fun Black Sabbath type metal.

The Gun Club - Fires of Love.

Vic Godard & Subway Sect - 1979 Now

Ape In Pink Marble - Devendra Banahart
I love Devendra Banhart but on the strength of one play of this new one I’m unimpressed. The material sounds ok, nice arrangements but the vocals...argh! The constant ‘uh-uh-uh’s just sound gimmicky, like Cliff Richard. Or Stevie Riks doing his Bee Gees piss-take.

Grinderman – Grinderman
It’s hard to believe that this is knocking on for ten years old now! Obviously there’s a large tongue in cheek present on some numbers but I love this album all the same. And I Don't Need You (To Set Me Free) is amongst my favourite Nick Cave numbers. There’s nothing jokey about this one.

Wolf People – Ruins. Wanted to check this after the very fine guitar the main bloke contributed to last year’s Baron album… Yet on first listen, there’s still something about their folk/psych mix-up that seems a little clunky to me, particularly if you compare them to Crumbling Ghost. It’s good, but not begging for a repeat play on the Spot… What do others think? https://wolfpeople.bandcamp.com/album/ruins

Shaman Elephant – Crystals. More jazz/prog/psych Norwegians with a truly dreadful name. Namecheck Motorpsycho and Mahavishnu Orchestra, but I think they may also have some Heep and Zeppelin albums in their collections… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8J_bXMBXWU

The Magic Mushroom Band – Pictures In My Mind: Anthology 1984-1994. Well, this was a bit of a turn-up. Having the kind of name and imagery that brings me out in a cold sweat, I had always steered well clear of this lot, but blow me down if some of this isn’t rather great. Early stuff does indeed sound like a gene splice of Hawkwind and Gong (though very well done), but later material is positively poppy. Yet it’s the dance cross-over stuff that’s really interesting, particularly this piece of pervy techno rock, which could be Psychic TV: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8l2FJrtihSU

Dead Sea Apes – Soy Dios. Nice desert psych/post-rock feel to this, enjoyable: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXdYJe-LzV4

Our Solar System – In Time. Another thing I got earlier this year, then promptly forgot about. Decent long-form Kraut-ish jazz psych. Yes, more Scandinavians… https://soundcloud.com/mike-newman/01-in-the-beginning-of-time

Jason Simon – Familiar Haunts. Dead Meadow bloke. Like this track a lot: https://jasonsimon.bandcamp.com/track/the-people-dance-the-people-sing-2

Radar Men From The Moon – Subversive I. Hmmm, kind of gothic industrial Krautrock? These people are Dutch I believe… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rkmrJoEcpE

Jethro Tull – Nothing Is Easy: Live At The Isle Of Wight 1970. As Robot Emperor notes, this is Tull going reet heavy, though one of the highlights for people like myself who are relatively agnostic about (most) live albums is the extended piano improvisation from John Evans in ‘With You There To Help Me’… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdvRBjR0wxw

VA – Brown Acid: The Third Trip. Comp of early 70s (mostly American) proto-metal, and mostly of a high standard. Great opening track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzNvI1aBoQ0

Listen With Father:

VA – Rebels And Records. Still going through this V&A comp of late 60s stuff. ‘White Rabbit’ got a repeat play request, which had me thinking what a completely crackers song it is. Them: “What’s it about, daddy?” Me: “Basically, drugs. Just say no, kids!”
