The entries for the north of Bolton are beginning to become crowded yet there weren't 'many' sites - there was just one big one - and that took in most of Europe. The inclination to pigeonhole is specious but maybe it's better to think in terms of 'densely spaced' and 'thinly spaced' areas. Often the sparse geographical areas correspond to uncleared Original Forest, such as Teeside, Brum, and the Wirral (maybe !).

The S.M.R. also allows groups of cairns to be entered as a 'Cairn Alignment'. That doesn't seem like the whole story either.
