the first time i went to avebury, quite by chance we walked up the herepath up to the ridgeway and saw the NT sign about the grey wethers.
I later read up on that whole glacial deposit thing. And I'm really quite charmed by the whole undressed stone thing, that the stones that are around and about are the 'cousins' so to speak of the megaliths at avebury and stonehenge.
The stone burning wasn't spur of the moment, a lot of thought must have gone into finding a farmer who had unwanted sarsens on his land, the stone burner, etc. what astounds me is at no point did none of the team (archaeologists all?) think that perhaps it was in poor taste.
