I heard this verdict yesterday with great interest - as far as I'm aware this is the first time a farmer has been prosecuted (happy to stand corrected on that). It seems progress that the full responsibility shouldn't lie with walkers provided they are following designated footpaths. All too often obstructions are put in the way of footpaths - unrestrained cattle being used as something of a deterrent. I quite like cows but am never happy to be in the same field as them. In this instance, as in almost all other instances of cattle trampling on walkers - dogs were involved and as before, the advice seems to be let the dog go and it will run to safety!!
