Bloody dangerous. Sometimes you wander around stones and then get charged by a herd. It's their home I suppose, but you gotta be careful. Me and she almost got stampeded in a field in Somerset once.

The countryside can be dangerous! Take care out there!

Yes indeed, young bullocks are usually curious and can appear to be stampeding - if you are brave enough to stand your ground and wave your arms around they usually go away. Nursing cows with young calfs are really the ones to avoid - especially if you have a dog with you. We finally found the elusive Malin More portal tombs on the last day of our trip to Donegal earlier in the year - to quote from my fieldnotes "The six great portal tombs were not in such good condition – they span two narrow fields both of which had farm animals in them. The three in the first field had three nursing cows with their off-spring standing close by. The cows became agitated by our presence at the gate so we decided to not go in the field."
Cows are big, sentient animals - I usually have a few words over the fence and leave it there (and never, ever, eat beef). Or sheep ... who are much more manageable to be close up to.
