It must be a hugely ancient route and I'd warrant the reason the stones are where they are in the first place?

Yes, it's a fair bet the road is older than the circle. It's easy for us all to get too far into "splendid isolation" mode, looking at tese places with modern, middle class (or OCD) attitudes. Maybe the stones were a pilgrimage stop, with lots of burger and trinket stalls....
